U.S. Senators Introduce COPIED Act to Protect Against AI Misuse

A bipartisan group of U.S. senators has introduced the COPIED Act, aimed at protecting journalists and artists from unauthorized use of their work by AI models. The bill mandates the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop standards for authenticating and detecting AI-generated content, including digital watermarks. It also prohibits the removal of such watermarks and allows content owners to sue for unauthorized use. The bill has received support from various publishing and artists’ groups.

Indonesia is recovering data encrypted in a ransomware attack that affected over 160 government agencies. The attackers, identified as Brain Cipher, initially demanded $8 million but later released the decryption key for free. The attack disrupted multiple services, including immigration and airport operations. The government is using a “decryption strategy” to restore data for 30 public services overseen by 12 ministries, though it is unclear if they used the provided decryption key.
