Vinod Khosla, co-founder of Sun Microsystems and a prominent investor, expressed strong optimism about the future of AI during the TechCrunch Disrupt 2024 conference. He believes AI will significantly reduce the need for human labor, leading to greater economic abundance and a potential GDP growth increase. Khosla acknowledged the risks associated with AI, particularly regarding its use by adversaries like China and Russia, and emphasized the need for safety measures. He also highlighted concerns about income inequality and advocated for policies to ensure equitable wealth distribution.

Brazil’s Collective Defense Institute has filed lawsuits against TikTok, Kwai, and Meta Platforms, seeking 3 billion reais ($525 million) for allegedly failing to protect minors from excessive use of their platforms. The lawsuits demand the implementation of data protection mechanisms and warnings about the mental health risks associated with social media addiction among children and teenagers. Meta stated its commitment to creating safe experiences for young users, while TikTok and Kwai emphasized their focus on user safety.

Meta is reportedly working on its own AI-powered search engine to reduce reliance on Google and Microsoft. The new search engine aims to provide AI-generated summaries of current events through its chatbot on Instagram and Facebook. A team has been developing a database for this purpose for several months, and Meta has also secured a deal with Reuters to use its news articles. This move comes amid a broader trend of tech companies exploring AI-driven search capabilities.
