Hackers Hate These Simple Website and Email Security Tricks

BizSharing #1 – Email and Website Security
July 3, 2024

We just wrapped up an amazing workshop on email and website security, and boy, do we have some juicy tips to share! 🔒 Let’s dive into what went down in this eye-opening session led by our security guru.

The Down-Low on Email Security

We kicked things off by tackling the ever-present elephant in the room – those pesky spam emails! Remember when our inboxes were just filled with actual important stuff? Yeah, those were the days! But fear not, because we learned some seriously cool tricks to keep our inboxes spam-free.

The big revelation? Your hosting control panel (cPanel) has a built-in spam filter that’s just waiting to be your new best friend! It’s like having a bouncer for your inbox – keeping out the riffraff while letting the VIPs through. Just set that spam score threshold to 8, and watch the magic happen!

Fishing for Phishers

Here’s where things got really interesting! We dove deep into the world of phishing emails (and no, we’re not talking about your weekend hobby). These sneaky attempts to steal your info are getting craftier by the day. But guess what? We’re getting smarter too!

Some golden nuggets we picked up:

  • Never click suspicious links (duh, but we all need reminders!)
  • Check the sender’s email address like a detective
  • When in doubt, verify with the supposed sender through a different channel
  • Keep your guard up even with emails that look legit – appearances can be deceiving!

WordPress Warriors Unite!

The second half of our session was all about keeping our websites fortress-strong. For all you WordPress users out there (and we know there are lots of you!), here’s the tea:

  • Keep your WordPress version updated (currently at 6.5.5)
  • Update those plugins and themes regularly
  • Consider security plugins like Wordfence
  • Don’t let outdated software be your Achilles’ heel

The Two-Factor Authentication Revolution

Remember when just having a password was enough? Those days are gone like dial-up internet! We learned about the importance of two-factor authentication (2FA) – it’s like having a second lock on your digital door. And trust us, in today’s wild west of cyber threats, you need all the locks you can get!

Next Steps: Your Security Action Plan

  1. Check your spam filter settings in cPanel
  2. Enable two-factor authentication
  3. Update all your WordPress components
  4. Audit your email accounts and forwarders
  5. Keep an eye on those suspicious emails
