Google has announced the discontinuation of both the Nest Protect Smart Smoke and CO alarm and the Nest x Yale door lock. This decision comes as part of a strategy to innovate within the smart home sector. The popular Nest Protect, which has faced stock issues, will be succeeded by products from First Alert and Yale.
As Google shifts its focus to new offerings, it plans to introduce a First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm later this year. This model aims to interconnect with current Nest Protect devices while using the Wi-Fi capable Google Home app for alerts, moving away from the Nest app for metrics.
Moreover, the Nest x Yale door lock will also be phased out, yet existing users can expect continued software updates and improved features through the new Google Home app. Google is working with Yale to produce a new smart lock model that will be compatible with other smart home ecosystems, offering more functionalities.
In a notable change, Facebook is returning to its original mission by introducing the Friends Tab, enhancing user experience by prioritizing posts from friends and family. This new feature seeks to counter the trend of recommended content that can often overshadow personal connections on the platform. Currently, it is available only in the United States and Canada.
Meta’s push to recapture the “OG Facebook” feel comes after a period of user dissatisfaction with algorithmically driven feeds that favored creators and businesses over personal connections.
