The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is investigating the Chicago public radio station WBEZ over its on-air sponsorships, which might affect its funding. This scrutiny involves 13 NPR and PBS member stations and may impact their financial support as guidelines are reviewed.
WBEZ received a request for information from the FCC’s enforcement bureau concerning its underwriting practices, with a deadline to respond by the end of March. WBEZ representatives expressed confidence in their adherence to FCC guidelines amidst financial difficulties faced by their parent company, Chicago Public Media.
In a related development, FCC Chair Brendan Carr raised concerns that underwriting announcements could potentially violate regulations by resembling commercial advertising. This investigation is described as part of a broader effort by the current administration to exert control over public broadcasting funding.
