Ireland’s media regulator, Coimisiún na Meán, acting on behalf of the European Union, has issued a formal warning to X (formerly Twitter), demanding the platform implement stricter rules to limit children’s access to adult content by Friday. This comes under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA). Noncompliance could lead to significant financial penalties, including fines of up to 10% of annual global revenue or €20 million, whichever is greater.

In a move to strengthen its position in the artificial intelligence sector, OpenAI is preparing to launch its GPT-5 model in early August 2025. This model is designed to integrate capabilities from its previous GPT-series and o-series models into a single, unified system, enhancing its versatility across a wide range of tasks.

Spanish telecom giant Telefónica is currently engaged in exclusive negotiations to sell its Mexican subsidiary to Beyond ONE, the owner of Virgin Mobile Mexico. The move is part of Telefónica’s broader strategy to streamline its presence in Latin America, with a continued focus on key markets such as Spain, Brazil, Germany, and the UK. The initiative aligns with strategic leadership under CEO José María Álvarez-Pallete (not Marc Murtra).

Amid ongoing operational challenges, Intel has announced plans to cut up to 25,000 jobs—approximately 15% of its global workforce—by the end of 2025. This reduction is part of a turnaround plan led by CEO Pat Gelsinger, not Lip‑Bu Tan (who serves on the board in an advisory role). The move comes in response to Intel’s efforts to improve cost efficiency and regain competitiveness in the semiconductor industry.

As OpenAI prepares for the GPT-5 launch, it plans to merge its o-series and GPT-series models, simplifying its product offerings. This transition reflects OpenAI’s broader efforts to evolve with market demand, increase task accuracy, and stay competitive in a rapidly advancing AI landscape.

Tech Explained

AI chip – An integrated circuit designed to accelerate artificial intelligence applications, such as machine learning and deep learning. Intel has struggled to gain a foothold in this rapidly growing market despite investments in new chip technology aimed at enhancing performance.

GPT-5 – The next iteration of OpenAI’s Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) model, designed to enhance natural language processing capabilities through advanced algorithms. This model will integrate distinct functionalities rather than relying on a single model approach.

Workforce restructuring – A corporate strategy that involves changing the organization’s workforce, typically through layoffs, to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Intel’s job cuts are part of a broader reorganization strategy to address underperformance in the semiconductor market.

Fines – Financial penalties imposed by regulatory authorities for non-compliance with established laws or regulations. X faces potential fines for failing to adhere to new EU rules aimed at protecting minors from harmful online content.
