An internal memo from Business Insider’s editor-in-chief allows journalists to use AI tools to help draft articles. The memo stresses that AI should be used like any other tool for research or drafting, but the final work must be the journalist’s own. Routine AI use does not require reader disclosures, but full AI-generated or unvetted content must include disclaimers. This policy reflects Business Insider’s evolving use of AI while maintaining journalistic standards.

In a further embrace of technology, Business Insider has appointed an AI newsroom lead and is implementing various AI-focused initiatives, such as a new search tool. The outlet’s parent company, Axel Springer, has also pursued licensing agreements with major tech players like OpenAI and Microsoft to enhance its capabilities.

Meanwhile, TCL has entered the smart home market with its K1 smart lock, which features four different unlocking options: a fingerprint scanner, a PIN code, a key, and a mobile app. Priced at $79, the K1 offers flexibility and ease of installation, making it suitable for doors without dedicated deadbolts.

This innovative smart lock can recognize up to 100 fingerprints, allowing multiple users to access the door quickly. It boasts a variety of useful functions, including automatic locking and privacy modes, adding an extra layer of security. While it lacks compatibility with smart assistants, the mobile app provides user tracking and scheduling features.

Tech Explained

Artificial Intelligence (AI) – In the context of journalism, AI refers to computer systems that can perform tasks typically requiring human intelligence. In this case, AI is being used to draft news articles, enabling journalists to optimize their workflow while still retaining their personal style in the final output.

Smart Lock – A smart lock is a keyless locking mechanism that can be controlled via smartphone applications or other electronic methods. The K1 smart lock by TCL exemplifies this technology, integrating various unlocking methods into a single unit to enhance convenience and security at home.

Fingerprint Recognition – This biometric technology identifies individuals based on their unique fingerprint patterns. The K1 smart lock utilizes a fingerprint sensor that can quickly grant access to multiple users, showcasing the potential of biometric authentication for enhanced security in everyday life.

Internet of Things (IoT) – IoT refers to the interconnected network of devices that communicate with each other over the internet. While TCL’s K1 lock integrates some smart features through its mobile app, it currently lacks broader IoT functionalities, such as compatibility with voice-activated smart home systems.

Personal Identification Number (PIN) – A PIN is a numeric password used to ensure security when accessing electronic devices or accounts. The K1 smart lock allows users to set a PIN, including temporary codes, thus providing a flexible option for guests or temporary access while maintaining security.
