This initial rollout supports English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic, with more languages expected soon, enhancing global conversations.
In the automotive sector, Chinese manufacturers have outsold Renault and Audi in Europe during August, primarily driven by a surge in plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) sales. Notable models from BYD, Jaecoo, and MG featured in the top-selling PHEV rankings, indicating a growing preference for versatile vehicles in the region.
Also, BYD is set to unveil its Seal 6 electric vehicle (EV) in Malaysia with a public test drive event scheduled for September 27-28. This new model, akin to the Qin L EV sold in China, promises impressive specifications and will join BYD’s expanding local lineup, including various other electric models.
Meanwhile, Amazon is currently embroiled in a US trial regarding alleged deceptive practices related to its Prime subscription service. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) claims that Amazon used “dark patterns” to enroll customers without clear consent and made cancellation processes unnecessarily complicated, potentially impacting millions of users.
As the trial unfolds, Amazon faces accusations of violating the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act (ROSCA), which mandates clear disclosure of service terms and explicit consumer consent. The outcome of this case, which highlights growing scrutiny of tech giants, could lead to significant changes in Amazon’s subscription practices.
Tech Explained
Dark Patterns – These are design techniques used on websites and apps that manipulate users into making choices they wouldn’t normally make, often to benefit the company. Amazon faces allegations of employing these tactics to enroll customers in Prime without clear consent.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) – This vehicle type combines traditional internal combustion engines with electric motors. PHEVs can run on gasoline or electricity, providing a flexible option for consumers who may not have access to charging infrastructure.
Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) – V2L technology allows an electric vehicle to supply power to external devices, serving as a mobile power source. For instance, the BYD Seal 6 EV features this capability, potentially enhancing versatility for users.
Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act (ROSCA) – This US legislation aims to protect online shopping consumers by ensuring that companies clearly disclose terms and obtain express consent before charging for services. Allegations against Amazon claim violations of ROSCA regarding Prime subscription practices.
Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) – BEVs are fully electric vehicles that run solely on electricity stored in batteries, with no internal combustion engine. They offer zero emissions and are part of the growing movement towards sustainable transportation, as seen in the rising sales of Tesla’s Model Y in Europe.
