OpenAI Launches Faster o3-mini Model for ChatGPT

February 3, 2025

Tech News

OpenAI has officially launched its new o3-mini reasoning model, introducing a free version integrated into ChatGPT. This model is expected to provide 24 percent faster responses than its predecessor, o1, while offering more accurate answers. For the first time, free users can explore reasoning models, alongside enhancements for paid subscribers like increased message limits.

Meanwhile, MS Paint is also evolving with the addition of a Copilot button. As part of a Windows 11 preview, users in Canary and Dev channels gain access to generative AI tools through this new feature. Users can now easily find helpful options like Cocreator and Generative Erase, reflecting Microsoft’s ongoing effort to integrate AI across its platforms.

In a notable collaboration, MLCommons and Hugging Face have released a massive dataset, named Unsupervised People’s Speech, for AI research. This collection includes over a million hours of audio recordings in various languages, aimed at advancing speech technology. However, concerns regarding potential biases in the dataset, primarily skewed towards American-accented English, have been highlighted.

Additionally, Microsoft is enhancing its AI search function for Windows 11 Insiders. The updated feature allows users to conduct searches across both local files and cloud storage using natural language. This expanded capability moves AI search closer to a user-friendly tool, streamlining the process of finding images across multiple locations.

To top off these developments, Microsoft has widened its AI offerings by announcing that o3-mini is now available through its Azure OpenAI Service and GitHub Copilot. This accessibility aims to further support developers and users in various coding and reasoning tasks, ensuring that the latest advancements are within reach for a broader audience.

Tech Explained

Generative AI – Generative AI refers to algorithms that can generate text, images, or audio in a creative manner. In the context of Microsoft Paint’s new features, generative AI tools help users create unique artwork or modify images seamlessly, bringing the power of AI directly into traditional design applications.

Public Domain – This term describes works that are not owned by anyone and can be freely used by anyone. The Unsupervised People’s Speech dataset utilizes public domain voice recordings, allowing researchers to access vast amounts of data without worrying about copyright issues, although potential biases may still exist.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) – NLP is a subfield of AI that focuses on the interaction between computers and human language. Microsoft’s updated AI search feature takes advantage of NLP, enabling users to query files using everyday language, making the technology more intuitive and user-friendly.

API – An API, or Application Programming Interface, is a set of rules that allows different software applications to communicate with each other. OpenAI’s o3-mini can be accessed through various APIs, enabling developers to integrate its capabilities into their applications, thus expanding the tool’s usability across multiple platforms.

Voice Recognition – This technology enables a device to identify and process human speech. The potential challenges surrounding voice recognition models using the new dataset highlight the importance of ensuring diverse language representation for improved accuracy, especially in recognizing non-native accents and dialects.
