German startup Insempra, backed by $20 million in Series A funding, plans to revolutionize the production of eco-friendly lipids through yeast fermentation factories. This innovative approach aims to offer sustainable alternatives to petrochemical-derived lipids widely used in various industries. The funding round saw participation from prominent investors, including EQT Ventures and Henkel’s venture arm. Insempra’s technology also extends to developing bio-based alternatives for polymers and textiles.

Tesla has surprised the tech world by purchasing over $2 million worth of lidar sensors from Luminar, a significant departure from Elon Musk’s previous skepticism towards the technology. Lidar, a crucial component in autonomous driving systems, was once deemed unnecessary by Musk for Tesla’s vision-based approach. This purchase suggests Tesla’s potential interest in exploring or integrating lidar technology, despite Musk’s earlier reservations.

Apple has unveiled the latest Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro M4 in Malaysia, featuring a function row, a larger trackpad with haptic feedback, and a sleeker design. Priced competitively, the keyboard aims to enhance user experience by offering MacBook-like functionality. While available for order, the release date for the M4-based iPad Pro in Malaysia is yet to be announced.

Apple has also introduced the Apple Pencil Pro in Malaysia, priced at RM599. This new stylus boasts enhanced features such as squeeze activation, barrel roll for tool orientation, haptic feedback, and Find My support. However, it is only compatible with the new M4-based iPad Pro and M2-based iPad Air, limiting its use with older iPad models.

Tech Explained

Lidar – Lidar is a remote sensing method that uses light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure variable distances to the Earth. It is a crucial technology in autonomous driving systems for creating high-resolution maps of the surroundings.

Yeast Fermentation – Yeast fermentation is a biological process that converts sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide. In the case of Insempra, yeast fermentation is used to produce eco-friendly lipids as an alternative to petrochemical-derived lipids.

Haptic Feedback – Haptic feedback is a technology that uses vibrations or motions to provide tactile feedback to users. In the context of the new Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro, haptic feedback enhances the user experience by simulating the sensation of touch.
