SpaceX’s Starship rocket faced another setback as it exploded during a test in Texas ahead of its tenth flight attempt. The blast was attributed to a failure of a composite overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV) in the rocket’s nosecone. Thankfully, no one was injured, and the company ensured the surrounding area was cleared for safety.
SpaceX continues rapid development of its 171-foot Starship and 232-foot Super Heavy booster. CEO Elon Musk has expressed hopes for launching a Starship mission to Mars as early as 2026, though experts note that significant technical challenges remain before such a mission is feasible.
Shifting focus, the Energy Commission of Malaysia has introduced a new electricity tariff structure aimed at fairness and transparency, effective July 1, 2025. With planned and detailed charges across energy usage, this new structure will offer clearer billing for users, impacting over 23.6 million domestic electricity consumers.
Significantly, the average electricity cost will decrease by up to 19%, despite an initial increase in base tariff rates. The new tariff also aims to encourage energy efficiency, providing users with rebates and a revised Time-of-Use scheme to promote off-peak consumption.
Lastly, Australia has successfully trialed technology aimed at enforcing a ban on social media access for those under 16 years. The findings suggest that digital age verification can be effectively implemented, although challenges in ensuring children do not bypass these systems remain. Several countries are closely observing Australia’s approach to potentially adapt similar measures in their jurisdictions.
Tech Explained
COPV – A Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessel (COPV) is a lightweight pressurized vessel used in aerospace applications. It consists of a liner overwrapped with composite materials which allow it to withstand high pressure while minimizing weight.
Time-of-Use Pricing – Time-of-Use (TOU) pricing is a rate structure where electricity costs vary based on demand throughout the day. This pricing strategy encourages users to consume power during off-peak hours when rates are lower.
Age Verification – Age verification refers to systems and technologies used to confirm a user’s age, particularly on online platforms. It is essential for enforcing age-related regulations, especially concerning children’s access to social media.
